The 85% Rule Will Speed Up
Your
Job Search Process
Now .. there is no easy way to say this. Forget cold
calling and
responding to blind job ads. It's all a matter of who knows who.
That hasn't and probably never will change. Here's the hard truth,
85% of job hires come through someone who knows someone and only 6% get
hired through a blind ad where you just sent something in by
email not knowing anyone who actually works there. 6% GOOD GRIEF!
What you seriously need to do is create your own data mining list
of every person you know. Don't be afraid to keep them updated on
what you are trying to achieve and you'll be surprised what doors
will open and how quickly.
Think of it this way. The 85% rule is like Insider Trading! Martha
Stewart went to jail for this remember. Because she allegedly was
able to profit from insider information on a certain stock. The
company who hires you, on an insider tip, will also profit by having you
come highly recommended by a trusted person. As such, you have a much less
risk of failure to that company. Insider Trading may be illegal when buying
stocks, but not when hiring people and yet, at it's very core, is exactly
the same thing.
Recently I was teaching an IT class the Job Search skills and one
particular student, who was average at best, made we wonder why he
bothered to take the program. He certainly didn't have the best
grades .. kind of lazy actually. So lazy in fact, that he couldn't
even be bothered to send out 10 resumes a week. He just hit on
everyone he already knew. Guess what .. you guessed it! His lazy
approach, applying the 85% rule I mentioned, landed him a
$40,000.00 a year IT job, two weeks prior to graduation. Lazy maybe,
or call it insider trading if you like, but a success story nonetheless.
Okay then .. be lazy .. gotta go with what works right!!
The hiring process is expensive and time consuming for employers.
If someone on the inside, who is well respected, recommends you for
a position. That is better than any letter of reference you'll ever
have. That insider was a filter that just gets you through about
four levels of trust. No excuses on this one, 85% hire through
someone who knows someone who knows someone .. promote yourself, you are
that someone worth hiring! It's the 85% Rule Of Getting
Hired!
You can, and likely have spent countless hours loading up your
resume and cover letters on large job websites. A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!
You'd be better off going over to paint your mother's house for free. She'll
love you forever and you'll see something good for
your efforts. The chances of you getting a call are slim to none. I
like the sites for research purposes. To see what jobs are
available and what they are looking for, as far as qualification
requirements etc.
Finally, remember my point, 85% of the hiring comes through
someone who knows someone. Don't fight this one on a stupid pride
issue .. "I want to get this job on my own" sure sure
you do, we all do! If you aren't listening on this one, your job
search will be like waiting for Enron to come back from the dead ..
trust me! Get your message out there as often as possible, and
someone who knows someone, who knows someone else, will have heard about you
being available and on it goes. Make this issue a serious priority and
you'll succeed! You simply can not fight the 85% rule
of getting hired. Getting Inspired & Hired that is!
